2024 Faves: Rough & Ready by Ruthven

A vinyl record of "Rough & Ready" by Ruthven stands at the back of a turntable platter. The album cover, visible in the background, features a moody desaturated image of Ruthven at a piano within a circular frame, similar to that of a camera lens or a bubble. An orange hype sticker sits on the top left corner with a sideways graphic of an hourglass. The cover has "Ruthven" in orange text and "Rough & Ready" in white text. The turntable appears to be high-end, with a silver platter and black base. A vintage-style radio or speaker with a golden dial is partially visible on the left side of the frame.

I’ve been anticipating this album ever since Ruthven released his 2017 debut single, “Evil.” Something about his style just speaks to the core of me as a music fan. It begins to make sense when you realize his influence from the likes of Prince, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, and the like. These are the same artists I grew up on.

Ruthven masterfully channels these legends while crafting something distinctly modern and fresh. If you appreciate soulful vocals, electro-funk rhythms, and music that bridges past and present, Rough & Ready is an essential listen.
