Yasuaki Shimizu’s 1982 gem, Kakashi, has gotten some good play since I picked it up earlier this year. This album is a ride, blending jazz, electronic, and Japanese folk in a unique way. Shimizu’s sax work is incredible, and the way he moves between styles is something else.
Oh, and that album cover with the cat? It’s spot on for the vibe – playful but with an air of mystery. It’s also a hint at how involved Yasuaki was in the creation of this album. Although there are a handful of collaborators, he composed and performed the majority of it himself—including the cat painting on the cover.
If you’re into jazz that pushes boundaries or the more out-there side of Japanese city pop, you should definitely give Kakashi a listen. Yasuaki Shimizu is a multi-hyphenate creative who loves to explore—all you have to do is join the ride.
